You have spent years dreaming of the perfect engagement ring. Now that you're engaged and that dream ring is a permanent fixture on your finger [ that's seriously exciting right!? ], you will want to make sure that it stays as sparkly and shiny as possible - for many years to come!
Austin proposed this past December and it was just as special and magical as I hoped! I baby that beautiful diamond. After we got engaged I did a little research on the care of diamond engagement rings and there were a few things that I didn't think about or realize. So today I am sharing 5 tips that have helped me take better care of my engagement ring and I hope they help you too!
Read on for 5 simple tips for keeping your engagement ring as safe and sparkly as possible.
Do Keep Your Ring Clean
To keep your diamond sparkling, clean it regularly to remove everyday dust/dirt, skin oils, and lotions. All of which cloud your diamond. You can soak your ring in warm water and mild dish soap, and scrub gently with a soft bristle toothbrush. Any brand name jewelry cleaner is a great option!
Of course, you can always take your ring to a jeweler to have it professionally cleaned if you're not comfortable cleaning it yourself. Once every 6 months is a good timeframe.
Don't let your diamond lose it's sparkle! The Jewelers Mutual Comprehensive Cleaning and Care Guide is a great resource with time-based checklists to help keep you on track cleaning and caring for your ring all year long! Download you own checklist guide here.
Do Purchase Insurance
Your engagement ring is an investment. It is important to protect that investment in the event that it gets damaged, lost, or stolen [ heaven forbid! ]. Getting the right jewelry coverage for your diamond ring is so important! Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company specializes solely in jewelry, so you can have peace of mind knowing that you get an extra level of protection that goes beyond what may be covered in typical homeowner's or renters's insurance.
Bonus Tip: Have your ring appraised every five years or so as the cost of precious metals and diamonds goes up. The value of lost ring that was appraised 10 years ago would be far less than the actual replicant cost. So make sure you have your ring appraised!
Do Schedule A Maintenance Appointment
It is so important to have regular maintenance done on your ring. Schedule an appointment with your jeweler at least once a year or every three months if your ring sees a lot of wear and tear. Your jeweler will make sure the prongs of your ring are tight and the diamond isn't loose, as well as, checking for any hairlines cracks in the shank of the ring.
Don't Remove Your Ring [ And Set It Down ] In Public
Removing your ring and setting it on top of the sink can be tempting when washing your hands in public, but this is a recipe for disaster. The chances of you walking out without your gem are very high. Steer clear of this temptation! If you must remove your ring, place it in the pocket of your purse. If you do forget to put it back on before you leave, your mind can rest easy knowing that it is still in your possession.
Don't Expose Your Ring To Harsh Chemicals
Remove your ring whenever you perform tasks that require interaction with harsh chemicals [ often found in household cleaners ], scrub the bathroom, or wash the dishes. These tasks erode the setting and dull the finish of the ring.
Bonus Tip: Before you wash the dishes, remove your ring and put it in a safe place. Setting your ring on the windowsill or the counter can result in a heartbreaking slip that sends your ring tumbling down the drain! Don't take the risk.
